Should we get rid of the word “retirement”?

Maybe we need to scrap the word 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵.

Because for a lot of Gen X…
It still conjures up images of: wheelchairs, assisted living homes, early bird specials, and quietly fading into the background.

But that’s not the reality anymore.
Many of us may have 25–30 years ahead of us after full-time work ends.
That’s not an ending. That’s an entire chapter.

And Gen X is redefining what this phase looks like.

We’re not just thinking about financial fitness.
We’re thinking about:
• health and physical vitality
• purpose and identity
• meaningful relationships
• reinvention
• freedom
• new challenges
• maybe even a second act

Some are starting businesses. Some are consulting. Some are traveling. Some are finally pursuing passions they never had time for before.

My husband recently competed in the HYROX World Championships in Finland.

Fitness has always been core to who he is… but now it’s becoming part of what retirement looks like for him.

Not slowing down. Leveling up differently.

Maybe retirement needs a rebrand.
Maybe it’s not retirement at all.
Maybe it’s… 𝘍𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵.

A phase where work becomes more flexible, purpose becomes more intentional, and life expands beyond the title.

What do you think? Should we scrap the word retirement?
