“What does a great Tuesday look like?”
THE CONVERSATION FOR ADVISORS: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲?
Most retirement conversations begin with dreams: Travel. Golf. Time with the grandchildren. Freedom.
Those are exciting conversations. But retirement isn't lived on vacation.
𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀.
That's why one of my favorite questions to ask clients is: "𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲?"
The question usually catches people off guard. Because they've spent years planning 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 they'll retire...Very few have imagined 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆.
Many retirees experience a "honeymoon phase" immediately after leaving work. The freedom feels exciting. But as the novelty fades over the next 6–18 months, some begin to struggle with a loss of structure, purpose, identity, and social connection.
That's why this question matters.
A client's answer isn't just interesting. It's actionable.
If they describe a Tuesday filled with learning, movement, meaningful work, and relationships...Their financial plan should support that vision.
If they can't answer the question...That may be one of the biggest planning opportunities of all.
Try this with one client this week. Ask: "𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲?"
Then listen for clues about:
• Purpose
• Structure
• Relationships
• Energy
• Meaning
If they struggle... Don't answer for them. Instead ask:
"𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆."
That simple follow-up often uncovers opportunities no retirement calculator can identify.

Don't assume retirement is going well just because the portfolio is.
The greatest risks often appear 6–18 months after retirement, when the honeymoon phase ends and everyday life begins.

Ask:
• 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱?
• 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁?
• 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄?
• 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴?
Those answers may be just as important as their investment performance.
𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲'𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆. Because that's where retirement is actually lived.
The future of wealth management isn't about better software. It's about better conversations.
Better Conversations™ isn't meant to be read.
It's meant to be practiced.
